Human Nature Wants You to Read the Label!

Most of us are all conscious when it comes to buying food - we check the label and it's ingredients to see if it is good or bad for us. But how conscious are we when it comes to buying cosmetics? And if we are and we scan through a cosmetic product's label, do we even fully understand what all those chemicals mean? All that is about to change because of Human Nature!

Human Nature, the Philippines' largest brand of genuinely natural personal care and cosmetics products, is a social enterprise with a big heart. It's the only brand I know that provides products that are 100% free from harmful chemicals.

Since Human Nature wants only the good for everyone, they also aim to educate consumers on what our cosmetics are actually made of. They want us to read and understand what's on the label.

The terrace outside 7th High's Club Room was transformed into a beauty lounge, wherein we would sample the latest offerings from Human Nature.

Inside the venue, I met fellow beauty bloggers Kira and Shen. They're both so nice and friendly, which made me feel at ease even if I went to the event alone. Thanks, girls! :)

While waiting for the event to start, Enchantea was served to the guests. It's made with extracts from lemongrass, kalamansi, avocado, duhat, and pandan. This drink is dubbed as "the Official Drink of Nation-builders"; it's co-designed, brewed, and bottled by the residents of Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan. It tastes great, too!

Human Nature's latest products were on display around the room.

Human Nature Natural Strengthening Shampoo and 100% Natural Strengthening Conditioner

One common thing in these 4 products (Mineral Powder, Mineral Blush, Hydrating Mineral Lipstick, and Mineral Lip Gloss) is Passion Fruit Seed Oil. It serves as a moisturizer, antioxidant, and is rich in Vitamins A and C.

Sunflower Beauty Oil

Human Nature 100% Natural Hydrating Lotion in Moonlight Passion and Sweet Indulgence. I like Moonlight Passion; it smells yummy (like bubblegum)!

Human Nature's "Read the Label" campaign aims to educate consumers about which beauty product ingredients are safe and risky for their health. This event talked about the different ingredients that are common to the beauty products we could be using now.

One perfect example is baby oil. It's said to be safe for babies, hence the name, but it's actually mineral oil, which is a by-product of petroleum. What mineral oil does is that it sits on the skin's surface and blocks the pores, similarly to a cling-wrap. Skin can't breathe, hence it prematurely ages. Now I won't allow my baby niece to use baby oil anymore!

Same goes for the versatile product, petroleum jelly. It is also a synthetic chemical derived from crude oil. I myself have been guilty of using that as a lip balm and a skin salve when I had contact dermatitis on my hands. My first-hand experience with it - my skin allergies did not get healed but instead it spread and grew bigger. I had to consult a dermatologist after, but now I know that I won't ever use that again.

But these ingredients (and more other synthetic chemicals I am unfamiliar of) are found in lotions, lip balms, lipsticks, and anything that moisturizes. In our present times where 1 out of 3 people will get cancer, we can't let any more harmful substances touch our body.
What are we to do?

Well, we'll have to read the label then!

Human Nature launches their first smartphone app that's like a dictionary of the ingredients of cosmetics and personal care items. You can download it for free on your iPhone, iPad, iTouch, and Android devices. (An online PC version is also available.) It's a cool app that instantly shows how safe or toxic an ingredient is (labeling it as safe, low risk, medium risk, and high risk). This serves as a handy and helpful guide for when you're shopping for cosmetics and encounter an unfamiliar ingredient you want to check.

Since apps have to be fun, you also get a chance in winning fabulous prizes by downloading this app!
  • An Eco Trip for 2 to El Nido, Palawan for 3 days/2 nights PLUS an Eco Party (eat-all-you-can organic buffet) for you and 100 of your friends!
  • More than 1000 other prizes up for grabs such as an Eco Adventure Trip for 2 for 3days/2nights worth P45,000.00 to Caramoan
  • A year’s supply of Human Nature products
  • Special Human Nature gift packs
The promo runs until December 31, 2012.

The best things in life are free, and you'll all be glad to know that this app is available for FREE on both the Apple app store and Android Market. Check out this site for more details: Share this great news to your family and friends so they too can read the label and make informed choices!
