Unique Kit Kat Flavors from Japan

I am amazed on how the Japanese are so creative with everything -  even chocolate! While we have the regular milk chocolate flavored Kit Kat here in the Philippines, in Japan they have almost all flavors imaginable.

Kit Kats from Japan

Each box costs ¥840.00 or roughly P364.00 (with the exchange rate of ¥1.00 = P0.43). In Greenhills, a box costs about P700.00. Talk about excessive markup. Each box contains 12 packs of Kit Kat minis, as it's smaller than the regular Kit Kat size we have here.

Here, I'll share with you 7 unique Kit Kat flavors - most of them I've seen for the very first time as well! These were bought from Japan by my colleague who went on a vacation there.

Kit Kat Wasabi Flavor

I'm never fond of spicy things, wasabi being one of them. While I expected a certain degree of spice in this, it was more sweet and creamy than spicy. This flavor is unique for a chocolate, but not something I would buy again.

Kit Kat Red Bean Sandwich Flavor

This one is brown and may look like regular chocolate Kit Kats, but they taste like the red beans you'd find in our Halo-Halo dessert.

Kit Kat Hojicha-Roasted Tea Flavor

Tea lovers might enjoy this Hojicha-Roasted Tea flavor of Kit Kat. This is made of roasted green tea hence the color. It does smell like smoked tea and the flavor is really distinct.

Kit Kat Citrus Golden Blend Flavor

One of the more interesting flavors among the bunch was this Citrus Golden Blend flavor. It's a mix of sudachi (more sour than lime), lemon, and mikan (Japanese tangerine). Upon opening a packet, you get a whiff of a strong citrus scent. At first, it would taste like mild orange juice, but you'd get that sharp, tangy citrus flavor afterwards. I like that this flavor has depth - very unique.

Kit Kat Strawberry Flavor

Okay, you might have guessed that this is my favorite among the flavors I have tried. I won't deny it. I maybe biased with the color, the packaging, and the flavor (as I love anything that comes in pink or red, or if it has strawberries in it). This one is like white chocolate and strawberries combined, and I love it. Real strawberries are tangy, but this one is sweet but not cloying at all.
Kit Kat Matcha-Green Tea Flavor

Matcha lovers would enjoy this as it has mild hints of bittersweet taste of green tea plus the sweetness of white chocolate. I thought that this would be my favorite since I love green tea, but the Strawberry flavored one still won me over. This one, however was a big hit among my sisters.

Kit Kat Brown Sugar Syrup Flavor

I imagined the Brown Sugar Syrup flavor to look brown but it's white. It tastes exactly like the brown syrup that comes with our order of hot taho (that we get from the streets). It's very sweet, and I needed to have a glass of water after eating this one.

Our local milk chocolate flavored Kit Kats have a different recipe from that of other countries. Since we live in a country with hot, tropical climate, local Kit Kats have been formulated in such a way that they won't easily melt even in room temperature. Leaving imported Kit Kats in in room temperature is a bad idea, as they turn soft almost instantly. Even if you leave it in the fridge the whole day, and decide to eat it now, the warmth of your fingers will cause it to soften quickly, which is one thing I love too since I don't really enjoy hard chocolates.

Which among these Kit Kat flavors do you fancy the most? Have you tried other unique flavors?

Love,
Helen

    2. where can we buy the japanese kitkat here in Phil?

    3. I've seen reasonably priced ones (in pouches) at S&R, Daiso, Japan Home, Waltermart Supermarket. Flavors vary from time to time, and sometimes they run out of stock. Do not buy from Greenhills or food bazaars; they will just rip you off.
